Early Beginnings

In the 1860s many settlers purchased smaller farms in Fig Tree Pocket, Brookfield and Moggill. Timber-getters also came for the fine cedar and hoop pine they rafted down Moggill Creek to the river and then to sawmills in Brisbane. Later there were sawmills at Kenmore and Brookfield. The area soon became known as ‘Kenmore’ after Sir Thomas Makdougall Brisbane’s family estate in Scotland. The history of Kenmore dates back to the 1860s when it was established as an agricultural area by early settlers. They cleared acres of land and planted crops such as grains, fruits, and vegetables. Soon after its establishment, a small village formed with a local school being built followed by businesses such as grocery stores and post offices. Over time the population grew and eventually developed into the residential suburb it is today. As one of Brisbane’s premier residential suburbs, Kenmore boasts leafy suburban streets, modern amenities and community groups making it an attractive destination for both newly transplanted and longtime locals alike.

The Growth of Kenmore

The arrival of railway lines into Kenmore during the 1880s significantly increased its population growth. By 1891, there were no less than five sawmills operating within the district producing timber products such as sleepers for railway tracks. The timber industry was so successful that it brought people from all over Australia looking for work. This led to an influx of new families who helped shape the community we know today.

A New Way of Life

By 1913, Kenmore had grown significantly enough that it had its own post office, church and police station. At this time there were many small family farms scattered throughout the district – some growing fruit or vegetables while others raised dairy cows or beef cattle – giving rise to what became known as a ‘gentleman’s hobby farm’ culture that has continued until present day.
